Aliph Jawbone ICON Bluetooth Headset Review — The Gadgeteer

The ICON itself is available in six different colors/textures (some are much harder to find online than others) and each are based around a unique “personality”.  You see, unlike other headsets this one talks to you.  Rather than showing you how much battery life is left with beeps, lights or other hard to decipher methods, this one happily tells you “About four hours of talk time remaining”.  When it’s ready to pair, it says “Jawbone is ready, waiting for phone to connect.”  This is actually amazingly simple and useful.  I could never remember if flashing blue was good or bad, and if purple meant I had a lot of battery life left or none.

Every type of gizmo needs a luxury version -- something packed with over-the-top features that make cheaper products look paltry by comparison. Such is the Aliph Jawbone Icon, a Bluetooth headset the likes of which we've never seen before. Available in seven different designs , offering downloadable voices and noise-cancellation capability, the Icon is the kind of Bluetooth headset that  Gordon Gekko would use. But luxury doesn't come cheap. At around £80, is the Icon really worth it?

If you use an  iPhone  in conjunction with the Icon, the latter's battery status will be displayed on your handset's screen. That's a welcome feature. As far as the Icon's battery life goes, expect to get around 4 to 5 hours of talk time from a full charge, and about a week's worth of standby time.

We see so many Bluetooth headsets here at CNET that most of them seem the same after awhile. That’s why we sit up and notice when a unique one comes along. Last year, for example, we were awed at the stellar audio quality of the Plantronics Discovery 975 and praised the design of the Aliph Jawbone Prime. Aliph, in particular, has been bullish in pushing innovation in its Bluetooth headsets, consistently making it on our top Bluetooth headsets list year after year.

This year, however, it appears that Aliph has outdone itself with quite possibly the most innovative Bluetooth headset yet. It’s called the Aliph Jawbone Icon and not only does it come in an array of designs that look as if they belong in an art museum, but it is one of the first headsets in the world to have a built-in “operating system.” This internal chip can be programmed to provide a far richer experience than other headsets can; for example, this lets it have a visual battery meter right next to the one on the iPhone. Also, this is the first headset we can think of to have its own line of Audio or Dial “apps” that you can install via Jawbone’s own MyTalk Web site.
